POWERING TODAY.
BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE.
STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITIES.

Substation technicians build, maintain, and repair the equipment that helps move electricity through the power grid. Their work may include transformers, circuit breakers, switches, grounding systems, structural steel, and control wiring.

Entry-level apprenticeships offer a path into the trade without prior journeyman experience. You learn through supervised work and technical instruction. Electrical or mechanical experience can be helpful, but admission requirements vary by training program.

Common requirements include being at least 18, having a high school diploma or GED, meeting math requirements, and holding a valid driver’s license. Programs may also require an aptitude test, interview, DOT medical certification, and a Class A CDL. Check your regional training center for its specific requirements.

Many substation technician apprenticeships require approximately 7,000 hours of supervised work plus classroom instruction. Completion commonly takes about three and a half to four years, depending on the program, work availability, and your progress.
